the truth is that any UNIX based system will work pretty well. From these 4, i just tested Ubuntu (and i can say it runs pretty well)

I'd say that Fedora is better than CentOS, Ubuntu is easy if you're not good with linux (but Mandriva is as easy... maybe easier). OpenSuSE and SuSE are to be avoided...

Very good unix knowledge -> debian
Good unix knowledge -> Fedora or Mandriva
basic -> Mandriva or Ubuntu
no unix knowledge -> better first try to learn on a desktop computer with a Mandriva. Use Midnight Commander (mc) to navigate through the file system (F3 to view file content), "man command" to have a manual page about command, ... then try to install.

when you use ubuntu in your computer it is easy.

just i am asking which is better. also the main problem for remote servers is the remote control as you must setup a vnc server with terminal.

this is the hard thing

Well, if you intend on using remote control, best choice is text-mode + SSH with RSA auth. That way, your key never goes on the net, neither encrypted nor cleartext.

The best distribution for doing this is Debian... But it's also a distribution which is not that easy for beginners.

About performances, you will get similar result with every distribution. After all, the programs are the same, it's mainly the packaging that differs.
