L2J Revision 4417:
L2JDP Revision 7670:
Hi L2J, i'm Gabriel from Brazil and i think about host a legally game server. But i have a few questions about my rights to modify your server and data pack, because they are free software right? But in the Readme.txt of L2J server i can't understand that:
--
====================
L2J Server
====================
$Date: 2010/01/06 13:12:11 $

II. Legal

b)NO world content should be incorporated in L2J
distribution. -- it's means if i want insert a NPC, for example, i can't? and in the same Readme.txt at
--

II. Legal

a) Preserve login notice. This gives us, L2J Developers, appropriate
credit for our hard work done during our free time without any
revenues. -- I think in edit that message for a message with your rights and my respectively, and the message will look something like this:

Actual message:

This server uses L2J, a project founded by L2Chef and developed by the L2J Dev Team at l2jserver.com
Copyright 2004-2011

New message:

This server is a modified and adapted version of L2J, a project founded by L2Chef and developed by Dev Team at L2J l2jserver.com
Copyright 2004-2011
and "My Name Server " in "My Server Web Site"
copyright yyyy-yyyy.

--Where "yyyy ", means the year of foundation of my server and the current year. this modification is given by the said purpose of my desire to legally host a game server and I think this is according to the GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE Version 3, 29 June 2007 at 4th paragraph:

To "modify" a work means to copy from or adapt all or part of the work
in a fashion requiring copyright permission, other than the making of an
exact copy. The resulting work is called a "modified version" of the
earlier work or a work "based on" the earlier work.

-- But if you think this message will hurt your rights, I can put my rights below of your, this is not a problem for me, I want just a permission to modify your server according to my needs, if I want to make a NPC QUEST MANAGER, for example. And if you can send me an email with this permission, and how to put a message with my rights on loggin notice, or just answer these questions in the forum and attaching the authorization, anyway this is my email address for contact :
[email protected]

And just another question how can i make a client connect to my server without hurt the rights of NCZ0ft? can i modify the l2.ini and servername.dat? If you can answer these questions I'll be very grateful :)

Observation: I got L2J server and data pack from yours SVN.

thank you for your attention
Sincerely,
Gabriel Camargo.

can i modify the l2.ini and servername.dat?
Not legally. You can use hosts file if you're really concerned about copyrights and all that stuff.
If you have problems, FIRST TRY SOLVING THEM YOURSELF, and if you get errors, TRY TO ANALYZE THEM, and ONLY if you can't help it, THEN ask here.
Otherwise you will never learn anything if all you do is copy-paste!
Discussion breeds innovation.
