How do effects work?

Hi,

How do effects work in l2j? When I search I get to see things like 0x00 etc. and I can't really find them defined somewhere.

I also don't know so much about how it all works with packets between the server and the client.

Basically I want to try other effects instead of Hero glow (on characters), and I also see effects sometimes added in .xml; if those are changable as wekk to ones that are findable in LineageEffect.u?
