Players see the features, they don't care how it is done.
Code optimisation is great, but should come second, when you already have the features.
I believe that this is why developers turn to "private" forks.
I am sorry but i cannot agree with you, we cannot start implementing things because they require approach which our source is not prepared to use.
For example Kratei's cube requires zone spawn system
Aerial Cleft requires Stages of Seed of Destruction or Seed of Infinity which we do not support yet.
The code needs changes so we can start implement things properly.

And most important feedback which nowdays is almost impossible to get from the community.

You could use the Beta branch for non-proper/temporary features, until complete and moved to stable.
Beta branch could become the best fork project ever :)

I'm almost sure that the best way is commit things directly on non-beta branch, at least you can see that the users report bugs in the forum.

I could be agree with you on this, more or less but...

remember there is a difference between BETA vs ALPHA, and there is no ALPHA branch in L2J, all the things considered ALPHA (aka no tested stuff) that require info/feedback/suggestions are generally put in forums first.

so we can say that forums is like our ALPHA branch.

Code from the forums gets incompatible with SVN, due to code refactoring etc.
So it is harder to test and give feedback.

Most people, including me, are no Java experts, but could help here and there.

e.g.
Tried to apply Sel Mahum AI patch from forum to latest SVN.
Failed.
No feedback.
No progress.

As for me, different code optimisations of l2j are more useful. Stability and performance of server are important things, while different features like buffer at community board, premium account, runes +50% exp I can do by my self. Saying about Aerial Cleft... During three years of playing RU retail server I was only once there with my party. None of my friends were there. I don't think that it has major priority :D

I always use the nightlies to build my own private server, I'm noobish compiling java, so it is great for me that the pre-installed ones exist! :D
And the quality of L2j's emulators nowadays is great!

The only customization I do is installing merchant/buffers/teleporters/etcs Npcs, just because of the utility they provide (since no mood to play offi-like :D)..

Anyway I agree with some others here, always focus on important stuff to fix, leave customization and secondary stuff to users, you can find a lot of nice things around and you're not alone on your working!

Things like Freya, Zaken, Pailaka 3 and 7s Quests, are, I think, mandatory features if we want to stay competitive. Maybe they won't be 100% working, but hey, there's already a warning about that in BETA. Feedback will start raining after that.

From my point of view l2jserver is the core of l2j. L2jserver does the dirty work and its a starting point for other public/private projects consisted by script kiddies to throw in more stuff and complete the client. An example is interlude. L2jserver c6 is fast, smooth and all good, but bugs like double trade and unlimited clan hall bsoe exist.

Not to mention that the same developers of l2jserver might be letting bugs slip so they can be hired to fix stuff or sell their private pack. Just a guess, no offense.

What you are saying is really sad, I'd like to believe that none of the L2J developers have ever done that intentionally.

Finally added "no offense" in a post doesn't make it friendly, keep that in mind for future posts.

I am not saying that being paid for coding is bad. I just want to point out that none of the l2jserver builds is 100% ready to go as a result its normal that people either use a pack which is based on l2jserver or they modify l2jserver themselves.
