Help About Machine

Post by mobius »

Hi, i want to start a new live server but i have a question for you guys.

I have 2 options

1.- I have a normal pc with

CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4770 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz) [# of Cores 4 / # of Threads 8]
RAM: 32gb ram ddr3 1600mhz
PSU: Corsair GS800 V2 800 W
COOLER: CoolerMaster® Cooler CPU M/Socket V6 GT
HDD: 1TB Sata3 7200 rpm 64MB

2.- or i can buy a server
CPU: Xeon E3-1225V3, Quad Core, 3.2 GHz, 8 MB Caché
RAM: 12 GB DDR3 1600mhz
HDD: 1TB 3.5''

do you guys think that the pc have the capabilities to maintain a server with 1000+ players or i must buy the server?

Dont know why do you think that "server" is better. Imo that pc got better spec. Just put one ssd on him for db storage.

cus a server its created to stay 24/7 356 days, servers are created to be more efficient.. they have less consumption, less heat, less amperage, less voltage spikes

i dont know how much time can endure that pc

So if you don't have "server" machine need to keep it 2 days on and 2 days off? Servers is created for different needs also got bad servers and good one. That pc cpu got same consummation like that xeon but got better speed so that xeon will consume more to catch the speed. In both case after all you will need server shelf and UPS to put that "server" or that "pc" so temps is not the problem.
From information what do you provide "pc" is better choice. If provide more information the answers will be more accurate.
Some missing or not fully detailed stuff:

Lan, controllers, ram, motherboard, hdd, psu, location, cases.

the pc will be in a datacenter, so, i think i wouldn't have problems with temp or energy
even i can restart the pc before every server maintenances if get memory leaks

So stick with pc you already got it. After time if server lag a lot or there is some problems you can switch with better machine. Is not good idea to to put money and to don't know if that server will grow, is hard now to take ppls in that old game :)

If you want to have a real live server with 200+ players i'd suggest you not to use your own pc no matter how powerful it could be your internet won't be enough also this means u should not use your own pc otherwise ppl will be lagging.

He is going to place the PC in a Datacenter, I don't think it will be used for something else.

Co-location is not cheap service.
Price could end up same as to rent a whole dedicated server.

Not to mention that hardware failure is on you if you place the machine yourself.

rent a server with similar (worse) features than the PC that I have would cost almost $510 usd
rent a datacenter would cost $125 usd

Really Oo

My server costs me around 450 a year, where housing would be 150 a month

Definetly buy a server,

its a risk to use your P/C for such things, for many obvious reasons.
