[UPDATED] L2j Server Important Changes!
Hi there guys, today is a really important day here on L2j, we have been discussing for weeks about the future of L2j, where are we now?, what are we going to do? and where we want to be?
All of this was a joke – Todo fue una broma – все это была шутка – All dies war ein Scherz
Well, well, well… i hope you all had fun like we did we laughed our asses off really hard, this was our April Fools Joke, all the licences stuff is just a small “white lie” that we prepared minuciously to shock you all.
We were going to reveal the truth on 2nd but since the huge impact that it caused and the large amount of rage/funny/emo/suicide comments both on website and forums we held up the joke for a couple of extra days to see you all freaking out for the sake of pure evilness.
Just like someone already said, all the jokes have a bit of truth on them, think about it for a while and then forget it, dont get too serious, but think that all our work we do here is for FREE and it will be FREE FOREVER, and for ALL OF YOU, not for us, since many of the current developers working on the official L2j staff dont run a server, many of them do it just for “fun” and/or “learning” purposes like me.

Notes: Just for the curious ones ranting and claiming that selling a paid L2j version violates the GPL, please read. As long we distribute the source code with the compiled binaries, you dont violate the GPL, the issue is that the same GPL let you distribute, modify, and sell the copy that you just bought, so you can’t effectively sell a “license” under the GPL.

On the other side we also discussed about the amount of people that doesnt care a shit about our work, and they keep leeching, stealing, and flaming us, some have the guts to ask on forums how to remove the credits! others come to IRC and spam the ops with messages to get “priority support cuz i donated you $5!”, other ones more silent just come here, read, pick, download, and just stay silent leeching our hard work and yours too, they dont give nothing back to the community.
At the end we got tired to list bad stuff and then we started to brainstorm for solutions to this issue and the future of L2j.
The wonderful idea came when it was suggested to create a “paid” L2j version, with proper priority support and addons, also nBd aggred to share his private custom events for this new version.
Of couse, for the rest of the users they still can get the vanilla L2j version, but future OpenSource Development will be stoped starting on Rev.4100, there will be only security patches from now on for the”free” branch, no new development or features will be added to the vanilla version wich will stay opensource for the rest of you to keep using it or developing it.
From now on the current L2j DevTeam will focus on developing for the ”paid” version of L2j with the new features and addons (we have prepared some awesome ones), you then should consider to buy a L2j License:

But unfortunately the price is too high for me, on my server about 600 people there are kinds of licenses for 300 users USD $ 349,99 / year and 1000 users (USD $ 749,99 / year). But what about me? 300 is not enough and 1000 is too expensive … I hope that you add intermediate options.

I think that would be a good idea, coz the free development doesnt stop than.

I was a very active developer in L2OFF community and just leave because they all acted the same way that you are doing it now.
You can make a $ 50 annual subscription and I am sure you will earn more money as they will be many more people that can pay and still use this project.

I think it is a 1. aprils joke. But however we were starting to think about opening a new server l2jserver files based. And as linux users we respect dev teams that are working for free with open source codes. We are planing to open a server just because we like the game and in our country is no more normal private servers where to play… We want to make a server without mega donates for mega items etc.. because this is killing the balance in game. If this all is not a joke we will try to get money to buy the license but it is very expensive for new servers or little servers i think. However if this all is a big joke and l2jserver will stay free we want to add a link to l2jserver website or link to your donations on our web and we were considering to donate from our income if the project will be successful.
I think i am not the only one that want to support l2jserver and respect the admins choice.
And i think the leechers are kiddies that do not know how to code something and do not know the beauty of open source coding. The real coders are respecting each others work.

I would defiantly pay $ 749,99/year if I knew that the Project will stay Live for that year, with 24/7 Development support and of course stable releases, with less bugs… I completely understand developers (nobody wanna work for free). I’ work in Web Development and I agree with L2j Dev. Team… What I’m saying is that I agree to Pay for it, BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT I’M PAYING FOR.. I think that Developers should provide a legal Contract with all the terms..

i agree you need motivations and i agree with payment… but, if you make this you have to give us a 100% server in the cronicle that are you selling. because its a service and none wants half service, EX: dont care if official is epilogue 3…. if we are in epilogue1 it must be 100%.

I think this is a great idea. All random servers will disappear fast and allow better servers to grow. Price is expensive tho because some servers don’t take donations and make nothing by hosting a server. Those servers will now be forced to take donations. Also why have 2 servers for 300 people and not 1 for 600 OR 1 server for 3000 instead of 3 for 1000. Also a per year license is a bit much. You should consider making it a per month payment or based on the revision upgrading to. I support the idea but needs to be a little more thought.

As Inner Circle says, the most important is the team morale, but they arent thinking in L2J community morale, only in his dear pocket. If they are bored and needs a motivation I think they need play more L2 (lol) and remember what we was doing years ago here, of course the money is.

Every java file in your package has a license on the top that refers in the open source code.Open Source=free.Your prices are crazy and there is not a possibility to pay you for some stupid features.
If you get bored to work for free just close the project or give it to someone who want to do it for free, and then work as developers and take money for developing servers.

lol after reading all your comments. i investigated and if you hold your mouse over the red – yellow – black images at top you will see it says april fools day. so obviously its a joke. and another thing they woudlnt be able to do the whole user capacity thing because its not them thats hosting your server. its the hosting company you choose. so they dont have control over how many users you have on your server. and im sure that everything in them packages you could get for free. but at first it had me thinking but then it all it takes is to just look around abit more and read it a few times.
Its interesting to see how the l2j license is broken (gpl? dunno what it is) so im not sure but licensing the project its illegal (as I said IM NOT SURE) ..

Clearly one… That after transition to a paid platform, L2JServer will die and very quickly…. The prices simply not the real! For such price L2JServer there should be one in one as off Servera lineage2.com and l2.ru… But they mismatch even on 25 % to any of these servers… And by that… They will simply die. Also it is the fact!

Ahahah awesome joke xD Anyway, I quit playing l2 for long time ago, now I’m examining l2j’s source for a while, to see what they do. I decided to use something similar to l2j’s design patterns with my little game project. It’s really amazing to be able to observe such a well-designed large project’s source. I never had a server or something like that but you guys who are using l2j must seriously be grateful to the team. You have my respect.

I think a good idea because it will be dropped all parasites and opportunists. I really think that the work should be valued and paid. Must be paid for should be taken very seriously the project. L2jServer Forever.
And who knows how to develop a framework that supports a lot more players. And who knows new databases and enterprise solutions for L2jserver. Everything is possible when you pay for it. And why not pay then? Should be taken seriously and am totally in favor of paying for it.

Unless you create more flexible price packages cause i need a 1000 people server but only 1 so if you make it /3 it comes to 190 dollars.That kind of package i m talking about.But again i ll need the same money for the server machine,so its a tottally goodbuy by me…
P.S.You chose the worst time to do this,L2 is on its eclipse and you now put prices on a dying game?Its ussually the opposite,at the beginning you charge,at the end you give free due to shorted demand.

You says that this is open source good for you but that costs alot for us to keep server for free. The only legal platform that works (maybe not without bugs but …) now request license, nice lol

I get what the joke was. Make people think L2J in general both vanilla and paid require a license to be used but in reality you will be discontinuing development on vanilla and putting 90% priority into the paid. I get the joke but at the same time its not really a joke, its just a heads up to the extreme. In my opinion the prices are outrages. I get the reasoning for them but it still doesn’t justify the amount your charging for the amount of players that can be hosted.
It is guaranteed that a lot of people are going to leave because of this decision so good luck with it.
